Whiff is part of a group of paintings exploring the edgeless atmosphere of anxiety during high pitched and demoralizing political divisiveness. The titles of the pieces in this series reference air in some way, as in the inescapable air of apprehension. In contrast to the typical preparation of opaque white gesso over canvas, Whiff was painted on gray cotton canvas that was sealed with clear acrylic paint medium in order to incorporate the solid gray as a cohesive first layer of atmosphere in the image.
